Catalina Foothills HOA BOD Meeting, July 11, 2006
BOD Attendees: Jenna Cohen, Raymond Graap, Bill Boyd, Janice
Johnson, Joel Katleman, Roy Frieden and Tony Luebbermann
1. Minutes approved from the June 13th BOD meeting. Unanimous
vote.
2. Treasurer's Report: Dante is on vacation. No report this meeting.
3. Old Business:
a. Alternative Garbage Service - Presentation by Robert Howe,
owner of Reliable Environmental Services. The pro's to the switch
include the following: They will pick-up garbage and recycling
one time per week on the same day. The size of the vehicle used
for pickup is a truck with a trailer; they weigh a total of 12,000
pounds fully loaded. This compares to Waste Management; its single
vehicle weighs a total of 56,000 pounds fully loaded. The weight
differential alone will help maintain the roads, and the vehicle
used will enable easier turns and less wear in the cul-de-sacs.
They have been in business for nine years, carry liability insurance
and are currently doing garbage and recycle pickup for Catalina
Foothills #9, Catalina Town homes and Catalina Pueblo. There
is an agreement but no fixed contract and the cost is $40 per
quarter. They bill quarterly, vs. Waste Management 3 times per
year. Total cost for a year of Waste Management is $150 per year,
for Reliable Environmental Services it is $160 per year. To Transition,
we would set a date and Waste Management will pick up our current
trash cans and recycle bins, and Reliable Environmental Services
will drop off the new ones to be used immediately. They will
also do special pick up if a customer wants it. If finances allow
the Home Owners Association will provide each home with one trash
can and Reliable Environmental Services will provide the recycle
bins. If extra trash cans are required, they may be purchased
at a discounted rate of approximately $50 each. All garbage is
picked up by people, not a machine, so trash cans cannot be too
heavy. They allow you to have as many cans as needed, up to three,
and request that all trash be bagged and branches tied together.
Some of the con's to the new garbage service are: The new trash
pickup service might cause additional work to some of us who
do our own yard work. The service has apparently a 4-5 ft. limit
on length of branch and tree limbs, for example. This will require
some extra cutting and sawing. Cleaning up dead wood on a one-acre
parcel, as most of us have, often requires dealing with such
limbs. Also, true, this should have a beneficial effect on the
private roads, since they do not have through traffic, but it
will probably have little effect on the county roads. The county
roads will continue to allow large trucks to go through, and
these will continue damaging these roads.
b. Roads Project Update: Currently over 90 homeowners have paid
the assessment and we are now working with Sunland on a final
quote and start date for the project.
c. Live At Home: Several groups of homeowner associations located
north of Grant and up to the University Farms area do this project
and call it "Lend a Hand." Ann Branham is the contact
that works with the Fort Lowell association. Janice has contacted
her about doing a presentation for us. We will be surveying our
homeowners and other nearby associations to determine the level
of interest for this project. The most requested service is for
help in transportation.
4. New Business:
a. Paving of Camino Miraval and Camino La Zorrela: Rick is working
with Catherine Hyatt on this project. The county will come by
with recommendations for humps for La Zorrela. There is no start
date for the humps project on Camino Miraval.
b. Decided to skip the month of August and not have a BOD meeting
in August. Jenna will try to get a newsletter out instead.
Meeting adjourned
